Sergei Rachmaninov's use of unusually widely spaced bell-like sounding chords occur in many of his pieces. Listen for lush melodic passages in this composer's music that was composed during what became known as the Romantic era in music.
Scriabin's works, since his death in 1970, have rarely been performed until recent years. Enjoy Mr. Bax and Ms. Chung's interpretations. They will each perform two of Scriabin's pieces.
Igor Stravinsky was a 20th century composer. He composed Petrushka for the Russian ballet orchestra during 1910-11. It is a story of a Russian puppet, Petrushka, made of straw who comes to life and develops emotions. Listen for the C major and F♯ major triads played together. This is a a bi-tonal device announcing Petrushka's appearance.

Astor Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer who played the bandoneón. He revolutionized the tango by combining elements of jazz with classical music elements. This style was known as nuevo tango which fused extended harmonies with dissonance and counterpoint. His compositions were widely accepted and are very exciting to hear and play.
